From the maker of the <a href="http://koney-industrial.blogspot.it/2009/12/bassdrum-murda-bit-crusher-distortion.html" target="_blank">BassDrum Murda distortion plug-in</a>, Bula, a new great virtual instrument: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/DistoCore" target="_blank">DistoCore</a>.<br />
<br />
With the aid of I:Gor he came out designing a VSTi totally oriented towards Hardcore and subgenres creation. In fact the first feeling I had playing around was to have a super-pimped Microtonic with ANY knob actually making something interesting to the final sound.<br />

<br />
<br />
The plug-in itself is composed by three main oscillators, each with separate filters and saturations. Every oscillator has a plethora of waveforms to choose from plus the ability to load up sampled waveforms. They also have separate panoramic positioning so it's easy to create interesting stereo-wide sounds. All the three guys go thorough an envelope follower, a resonating filter, a ring modulator, an overdrive + bit-crusher section, and an equalizer before being outputted to the host. This part ensures the most extreme and optimized distortion and punch!<br />
<br />
From my personal experience with it I'd say that there's some sort of inner modulations between the oscillators, because when adding more volume to one it's possible to hear the other ones shape themselves so that the result is always coherent.<br />
<br />
Hearing the overdrive + bit-crusher section at work really makes me suspect the code behind is the same of the original Bassdrum Murda plug-in and this can only be a good thing!<br />

I must say that after just ten minutes of semi-random tweaking I regretted not having used it before and after twenty I came out with a solid groove, possibly for a new track.<br />
<br />
The concept behind resembles the one of a program that I used to run on the Amiga called <a href="http://koney-industrial.blogspot.it/2010/01/real-time-graphical-synthesis.html" target="_blank" title="RGS for Amiga">RGS</a> so a small paint program used to shape waveforms and the ability to import images. Those data are then added or multiplied together according to the knobs on the right to produce sounds.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlP0Omu4FcgU1vDggBHO9Dvasa97SFpSuEvfX4pvBF7Y0DGf1KPaQcpb04NlGqOrWpVTNqRSRxsv3e293VNemWzgRkM6izb25K7lZJWyrkIz67WQsSFU8WotrrDykosOmH4qlhDyyyhBY/s1600/HARSH_DIGITAL_NOSE_VST.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="231" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlP0Omu4FcgU1vDggBHO9Dvasa97SFpSuEvfX4pvBF7Y0DGf1KPaQcpb04NlGqOrWpVTNqRSRxsv3e293VNemWzgRkM6izb25K7lZJWyrkIz67WQsSFU8WotrrDykosOmH4qlhDyyyhBY/s320/HARSH_DIGITAL_NOSE_VST.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<blockquote>
Harsh Digital Nose a synthesizer that converts two images into two oscillator waveforms and then mixes them in various horrible ways. You can drag and drop images or draw them on the plugin in real time.</blockquote>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="150" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/uxHBZXtrgjg" width="336"></iframe><br /><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxHBZXtrgjg" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxHBZXtrgjg</a></div>
<br />
<br />
<blockquote>
WELL ITS A LITTLE BIT OF EXPERIMENTAL FUN AND YOU CAN PAINT AND DRAW AND COMMUNICATE WITH THE ALIENS TOO.</blockquote>
The name couldn't have been better as it develops some very convincing industrial leads. Deep, polyhedric sounds with sharp highs are guaranteed.<br />

I like this way of sampling because it involves both the <a href="http://koney-industrial.blogspot.com/search/label/Roland">Roland</a> <a href="http://koney-industrial.blogspot.com/search/label/TR-909">TR-909</a> and some <a href="http://koney-industrial.blogspot.com/search/label/BOSS">BOSS</a> <a href="http://koney-industrial.blogspot.com/search/label/pedals">pedals</a> although I wish the guy had sampled it through 13 distortion units IN A ROW!! :)<br />
Besides this, my favorite distortion comes from the Elektron SidStation: I love the <a href="http://koney-industrial.blogspot.com/2009/12/commodore-64-background-noise-synth.html">SID background noise</a> in action.<br />

<blockquote class="tr_bq">The MT-2 Metal Zone™ is one of BOSS' most popular pedals. This stompbox provides some of the most over-the-top, insane distortion tones in the world—with huge mids and lows and an ultra-saturated sound. </blockquote><blockquote class="tr_bq">The 505 works well with a computer and sequencer or as a stand alone drum machine. It is extremely basic and unexciting but does make a good starter or play-along drum machine. Vince Clarke and Aphex Twin has used the 505.</blockquote>I'm happy of this combo because I used to own both devices but not simultanously so I never had the chance to make any samplekit with them. This also confirms what <a href="http://koney-industrial.blogspot.com/2010/01/my-thoughts-about-pedal-fxs.html">I said about pedals</a> in the past.<br />

<br />
Research in Industrial Music is often performed through deep distortion and heavy processing of sounds which sometimes lead to inconsistency, lack of harmonics and general dullness: characteristics that make the sound itself easily masked in the mix by other, more powerful, instruments. Here a good reverb can help the sound be perceived again.<br />
<br />
The other employment is quite the reverse process, by reverberating some sound and adding distortion afterwards it's possible to dirty up material otherwise too clean for the Industrial freaks.<br />
<br />
Personally I am using both analog and VST reverb units because for an effect of such importance I need a choice as wide as possible.<br />
<br />
As outboard I got an oldschool <a href="http://www.dancetech.com/item.cfm?threadid=2678&lang=0" target="_blank">ALT Multiverb LTX</a>:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPijYBQZwfTuJfrzW43bZHk1hVtxel3KJnFiC9g5_pxWyxJ1q_2jrsYqdj-a7jb0XkN4EO4rjm09GWOGgBqdB6MUcstN4avzaLlM01o6Yk-uctsgTki2OvLmemp2CqsdiphTTj8icDT6U/s1600/MULTIVERB_ALPHA_2_0.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="220" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPijYBQZwfTuJfrzW43bZHk1hVtxel3KJnFiC9g5_pxWyxJ1q_2jrsYqdj-a7jb0XkN4EO4rjm09GWOGgBqdB6MUcstN4avzaLlM01o6Yk-uctsgTki2OvLmemp2CqsdiphTTj8icDT6U/s320/MULTIVERB_ALPHA_2_0.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
which has the harsh sound I am looking for. It works with just presets but once found the good ones it's ready to rock. Indeed it's connected right after a Spring Reverb, developing a nice metallic sound.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUtJTqOekgxiFXkT0aNKtr30OJ9m2u7ybAL5uMC4gn_lywuC5MOAocckxw-hu47_cNc_fYrXro4Uc_E1joLUiSyC5M_pU5dQRHGQorVmuGbuwnys4x7QLWk3Bf7YDyyPqvDUmAc4qyTK0/s1600/CIMG1109.JPG"><img alt="Eagle Products Spring Reverb" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405193382085869074" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUtJTqOekgxiFXkT0aNKtr30OJ9m2u7ybAL5uMC4gn_lywuC5MOAocckxw-hu47_cNc_fYrXro4Uc_E1joLUiSyC5M_pU5dQRHGQorVmuGbuwnys4x7QLWk3Bf7YDyyPqvDUmAc4qyTK0/s320/CIMG1109.JPG" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 240px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 320px;" /></a><br />
On the ITB side I've tried thousand different VST but at the moment in my opinion two are the best: the <a href="http://www.fileol.com/audio-and-video/omniverb-2.0.2.html" target="_blank" title="Omniverb free VST">Omniverb 2.0.2</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i1-win.softpedia-static.com/screenshots/Omniverb_1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="157" src="http://i1-win.softpedia-static.com/screenshots/Omniverb_1.png" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><br />
and the reverberation section from the <a href="http://koney-industrial.blogspot.com/search/label/space%20echo">Space Echo VST</a><br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSfPzkvyknivfkMHi0yHeoQxNJ5KYuzlqqVh8EGf_Yl0zbuvFBRB8FAnxP3yvN_PLUmghgHMALgEmZyJy0FLoUAaK-m8BqUsr0DZwRITmDpGXoWnDJwHjInNLu719swPJQTUELL7Nmbj0/s1600/gs-201.jpg"><img alt="Space Echo VST" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5405218943086251154" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSfPzkvyknivfkMHi0yHeoQxNJ5KYuzlqqVh8EGf_Yl0zbuvFBRB8FAnxP3yvN_PLUmghgHMALgEmZyJy0FLoUAaK-m8BqUsr0DZwRITmDpGXoWnDJwHjInNLu719swPJQTUELL7Nmbj0/s320/gs-201.jpg" style="cursor: hand; cursor: pointer; display: block; height: 146px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 320px;" /></a><br />
They both work great as a pre-distortion processing technique but the Tape Echo works a bit better than Omniverb for post-distortion.KONEYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04886063362189533379noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18955920865289129.post-54448272368882378062011-07-13T03:53:00.000-07:002011-07-13T10:47:28.191-07:00Utterly distorted Japanese vocal samplesObviously my PSX emulator needs some fixes on the sound driver configuration. The misconfigured audio driver had a “save to disk” option so it was easy to obtain a .WAV file with all the sounds recorded. Something that makes me totally happy is that hitting the pads outputs distorted sounds. Lucky me, I got a self-circuit bending unit for the price of a faulty one!! This reminds me of a TR-909 I owned back in the nineties which had the hi-tom section broken and would output just a white noise, obeying to MIDI note-ons and offs... inspiring!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKzKgqRrwO2GroWmvAvZvcYRTwBi3h5Ri1-hld8pdBFmHu66GO3heo31UZIMup7ZKah3cWHNIVcJLvhvX_OLBzo8RVkklap2Snvicw_eIFdKk-43Zea4NPc0Us62TUdffH4Bm0WRa2aBU/s1600/Alesis_SR-16_Techno1.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKzKgqRrwO2GroWmvAvZvcYRTwBi3h5Ri1-hld8pdBFmHu66GO3heo31UZIMup7ZKah3cWHNIVcJLvhvX_OLBzo8RVkklap2Snvicw_eIFdKk-43Zea4NPc0Us62TUdffH4Bm0WRa2aBU/s320/Alesis_SR-16_Techno1.JPG" border="0" alt="Alesis drummachine with industrial sounds" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5571457352749141666" /></a><br /><br />During my early years of music making I started to collaborate with an industrial/noise band called "Gennaio". They were four guitarists and an Alesis SR-16 as a drummer and my role should have been to replace the drummachine playing live with my Amiga computer. <br /><br />The project never went too far but I had the chance to hear the SR-16 cold and reverberated sound in action and it sounded deeply industrial. This sentence from <a href="http://www.vintagesynth.com/misc/sr16.php" target="_blank" title="Alesis SR-16 Drummachine" >vintagesynth.com</a> just confirms it:<br /><blockquote>No doubt the SR-16 is a powerful drum machine, but ultimately it also sounds like a drum machine. However I am collecting stuff from people sending me <a href="http://koney-industrial.blogspot.com/p/suggest-something.html">suggestions</a> so I plan to post a little more from now on.<br /><br />My friend <a href="http://www.facebook.com/#!/album.php?aid=2488&id=100000220399365&ref=nf">Furio</a> loves analog modular systems. He builds his own modules from kits often modding them to suit his needs. We've been talking about the employ of such machinery into modern industrial music and the end was that he should have done a few samples for the blog, so here we are with some Modular Kickdrums.<br /><br />This is how the chain has been set up:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAbwZNNlGJU3ioxn-vLsuko40yhJUCEu1hd4ahaxCfQtq41XTYYyePQkPtLeVboA89IQUheNtWHm9cB19nZ4n1P1pHsBbOFF7zKJcNQ3NZJQVNvDR6GhCboXEvrvij5oqYAs6Iq3tfkm8/s1600/photo1_PAiA_VCO.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAbwZNNlGJU3ioxn-vLsuko40yhJUCEu1hd4ahaxCfQtq41XTYYyePQkPtLeVboA89IQUheNtWHm9cB19nZ4n1P1pHsBbOFF7zKJcNQ3NZJQVNvDR6GhCboXEvrvij5oqYAs6Iq3tfkm8/s320/photo1_PAiA_VCO.jpg" border="0" alt="PAiA Module" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494409959407914866" /><br /></a><a href="http://paia.com/proddetail.asp?prod=9720K&cat=12" target="_blank" >PAiA 9720 Dual VCO / MODULATION</a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLj71N7-M9hfwkw-m2no0OS88_lIYfE28l2jyK4icTugibqhEG2zHYWo3wfNwD2mg7I4kVf-eJ9jAqcu9vZdClETpH5W0dyttPUPW7JO56q8rTczF5blqCdUC3liNLJn8plGw4d2CvDqE/s1600/photo2_Dark_Side_SSM2044_VCF_VCO+.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLj71N7-M9hfwkw-m2no0OS88_lIYfE28l2jyK4icTugibqhEG2zHYWo3wfNwD2mg7I4kVf-eJ9jAqcu9vZdClETpH5W0dyttPUPW7JO56q8rTczF5blqCdUC3liNLJn8plGw4d2CvDqE/s320/photo2_Dark_Side_SSM2044_VCF_VCO+.jpg" border="0" alt="Dark Side SSM2044 VCF VCO Luna Modular Synthesizer System Module" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494410721381403474" /></a><a href="http://www.synthdiy.com/show/?id=4060" target="_blank" >Dark Side SSM2044 VCF/VCO</a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJYQDN8buJuT7NPBIdf8vlxBrTkKT1u1k6gwuDvAStj0suN_qSIComih1FesozAcEeRu-AXf6JvgQ3kSaX93vPgS8HbFlwzMTfXVgj9-H8zYpyCm36OAq8BNbWKlm_MvkdHPdMZF6aOgk/s1600/photo3_Doepfer_VFC.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJYQDN8buJuT7NPBIdf8vlxBrTkKT1u1k6gwuDvAStj0suN_qSIComih1FesozAcEeRu-AXf6JvgQ3kSaX93vPgS8HbFlwzMTfXVgj9-H8zYpyCm36OAq8BNbWKlm_MvkdHPdMZF6aOgk/s320/photo3_Doepfer_VFC.jpg" border="0" alt="Doepfer A-132-3 Dual linear/exponential VCA" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494411383271558818" /></a><a href="http://www.doepfer.de/a1323.htm" target="_blank" >A-132-3 Dual linear/exponential VCA</a><br /><br />The results are some clean and punchy kicks, ready to be slaughtered with the most inhuman <a href="http://koney-industrial.blogspot.com/search/label/distortion">distortion</a> techniques!<br /><br /><blockquote>Il modulatore è praticamente un inviluppo AR con attenuatore, settabile via switch in modalità LFO che modula in continuo un VCO.
